Big Sands is located on the Barron River near the town of Kuranda. This series of cascades and shallow sandy pools makes for a great place to swim on a hot day.
Please note: The Barron River is generally safe from crocodiles upstream of the falls. However there has been reports of salt water crocodiles in this river which have never been proven true. Officials say it is unlikely. Please be keep away from all deep water and follow all local signage and advice. Even better ask the locals before swimming here to keep up to date with all the recent news.
How to get to Big Sands?
To get to Big Sands follow Oak Forest Road and turn onto Buchan Street. After crossing the railway track you can turn either left or right. If you head left along Railway Street you will come to a dirt track where you can park in the shade. If you turn right after the railway track, follow the dirt road and you can park along the road. If you keep following the road you can drive right down and park in the river bed, but only if you have a 4WD.
