Rum Jungle Lake is an old uranium mine which closed in 1971. The open cut mine has since filled with water. This might put you off from swimming here but rest assured, an extensive scientific study of the area concluded that the radiation levels here are similar to the background radiation levels anywhere in Australia.
The water temperature of the lake ranges from 30ºC to 31ºC which is quite warm, but it’s still a nice swimming hole on a hot day. The lake, located in the Rum Jungle Lake Reserve, is also a popular diving site due to its depth of around 70 metres. It’s also great spot to stop for a picnic under the shady trees. There are toilets and a couple of picnic tables.
